Interesting. Didn’t know RED wants to go into that direction. Competition in the DSLR market is kind of jump starting at the moment.

“We believe, and are developing for late 2009, a replacement for DSLRs. Currently, we call it a DSMC (Digital Still & Motion Camera).

While (insert code name) is not a replacement for Epic or Scarlet, it is strategically targeted at the DSLR space. As Nikon and Canon release their 720P and 1080P, respectively, DSLRs with video capture… RED has a more advanced view of the future. We look forward to rapidly pushing the “big guys” along in feature sets and capabilities.

RED firmly believes in higher resolution, higher S/N, higher DNR, higher frame rates, smaller bodies, more system flexibility, and many more options as we move forward in camera development.”

I think HD video is going to be *the* feature for DSLRs coming up in the next couple years. Nikon is the first out of the gate with the D90, but I get the feeling they don’t even know the pile of gold they’re sitting on (if you’re listening Nikon, it’s time to get hot and heavy with Vimeo). If Canon releases the 5D Mk. II with 1080p it’s going to be revolutionary. From a consumer standpoint I’d trade lower resolution (who can watch anything higher than 1080p anyway?) for a bigger sensor any day of the week. The 5D’s full frame sensor is bigger than any of the Red cameras’ Super 35-sized chips, and I predict they’ll share one of those with their new DSLR (er, DSMC). I’m curious to see what they do for a lens mount, too. In any case, we just crossed some kind of technological threshold, and any still photographer who’s ever dreamed of dabbling in motion with the tools they find familiar should rejoice. I know I am.
